Woldsman
Stage 1: Driffield Showground to Danes' Graves
- Leave the Show Ground as directed on the day by following marked route to gate onto busy A164.
- Go right and then immediately right again through wooden gate crossing field to duckboards that lead to two footbridges.
- Continue ahead until clear path on left. Go left, follow path to emerge onto busy A164.
- Go right. At roundabout stay on footpath going right into York Road.
- Continue ahead. At Spellow Gate go left.
- Just beyond bridge over A164. Go right through double wooden gate. Continue ahead along track / field boundary with A164 on right.
- Through wooden gate onto road B1249. Cross road to footpath. Go left. Continue on roadside footpath for {1200m.} Take care, very fast traffic.
- 10m after roadside footpath ends go right, on clear track, soon passing sheds on right.
- At T junction of tracks go left Cross road with care, continue ahead into lane opposite towards York Wold Pigpro Ltd.
- At piggeries, continue ahead on track, which becomes wide field boundary, hedge on right, then becomes a gravel track again.
- When track turns left, go right, Bridle Way fingerpost. Go through small copse; continue ahead along field boundary, hedge on left.
- On reaching clear track, go left, slightly uphill.
- At T junction of tracks go left. Continue ahead to Danes' Graves checkpoint.
Stage 2:Danes' Graves to Sledmere Village Hall
- Continue ahead along tarmac lane.
- At T-junction with unclassified road, go left along road to reach and cross B1249. Take care, very fast traffic. Go down track opposite.
- Continue ahead. Until wide concrete track (formerly part of Cotton Airfield) on right, waymarkers on post. Go right, continue to cross old runway with large isolated barn.
- At T junction with concrete track, go left on clear track towards farm.
- At trees before farmyard, go right, waymarker on post.
- At end of trees go left, cross concrete track, go through handgate; go slightly right across field to fingerpost and through gate in wire fence.
- Go downhill to dale bottom, derelict church on right.
- Continue ahead, keeping in the dale bottom. (Soon with wire fence on right). Go through wooden handgate, continue ahead in dale bottom until four large concrete blocks on left.
- Almost opposite the concrete blocks, go right through wooden handgate, Continue ahead in dale bottom with fence / trees on right.
- Through handgate in wire fence, keeping in dale bottom. Eventually gently climb out of dale on clear track to metal gate.
- Follow track through farmyard to unclassified road, Cross road, continue ahead onto private land opposite. Following track / field boundary, hedge on right.
- On reaching hedge in front, go right, hedge on left. Find gap in hedge and cross cultivated field in single file, heading towards a post and short hedge. Keep this hedge on left; continue ahead across field to reach wood.
- At wood, go left, Follow field boundary to end of field, wood on right.
- Go right on clear track. Track bends left to Sledmere Castle (folly).
- Go right down clear track to road B1252. Go right along road.
- At T-junction go right along B1253 Bridlington, Scarborough, Sledmere Village Hall on left.
Stage 3: Sledmere Village Hall to Wharram Percy car-park
- Leave the Hall and retrace the route to the T-junction. Go right, B1258 Malton. Walk through the village passing the Triton Inn and Sledmere House on the left, The Waggoners' Memorial and Eleanor Cross on the right. Continue ahead to pass Car Park (*right and leave the village. Please use wide grass verge on right of B1241.
- At Mill Farm sign, go right, down lane. At cross tracks continue ahead towards farm.
- At farmyard, continue ahead through metal gate, cow shed on left. Ahead through another metal gate (pile of tyres on right), continue ahead on field boundary, hedge on right.
- Boundary becomes a track, hedge on right, wire fence on left. Go through wooden gate to enter farmyard.
- After first farm buildings on right, go right, white chalk wall on left. E R Meginson and Sons, Towthorpe Manor sign on right. Continue ahead through farm yard past barking dogs on right on a clear track.
- At Y-junction of tracks, fork right, small plantation of Christmas trees on left. Continue ahead to derelict buildings (Towthorpe High Barn).
- At T-junction, go left, hedge on left. At locked metal gate onto B1248, go right for 80m to go through gap in hedge / fence onto wide grass verge alongside road. Go right, take care, fast traffic.
- At Dewpond on left, cross road, to go down clear track on left. Go downhill to pass Burdale House Farm on right. Continue ahead round bends to reach cross roads.
- Go right, uphill on unclassified road for 1% miles to reach Wharram Percy car park on left.
Stage 4: Wharram Percy to Thixendale Village Hall
- Leave the car park by the footpath signpost Wharram Percy. Go downhill through two gates.
- Do not cross the bridge over the disused railway, but use the kissing gate on the right to cross the trackbed. Go through a second kissing gate to enter the deserted medieval village of Wharram Percy.
- Slightly uphill on a clear track. Just after information board on the left, go left slightly downhill to the cottages.
- Go through kissing gate. Continue ahead to pass ruined church on right. Continue through graveyard. Go through kissing gate.
- Go left to cross earth dam. Millpond on right, stream to left. Uphill to a kissing gate, please read the Health and Safety instructions on the right.
- Continue uphill, to reach top of bank, by a Wolds Way finger post Go right, trees / fence on left, dale on right.
- Reach wire fence and trees. Go right. Trees / fence on left, dale on right. Pass through two gates / styles.
- Ignore Centenary Way finger post on right, Continue ahead on Wolds Way.
- Reach a clear chalk drive. Go left at Wolds Way finger post, on narrow footpath through small copse. Continue ahead along wide field boundary, hedge on left.
- Cross style. Ahead downhill. Through gate / style. Keep left. Cross style. Go right, Steep uphill, fence on right.
- Cross style. Ahead gently uphill along field boundary. At Wolds Way finger post, go left.
- Wolds Way finger post on right, go right onto clear track. When track turns left towards farm buildings, continue ahead on green track.
- Cross ladder style over electric fence on right. Continue ahead onto clear chalk track.
- Downhill into Thixendale. Ahead along village street to Village Hall on right, behind information boards.
Stage 5: Thixendale Village Hall to Givendale Scout Hut
- Leave the Hall, go right along the road. (Cross Keys on the left after 200m).
- At T-junction, go right. Continue ahead along unclassified road, Ignore two unclassified roads on left.
- At Wolds Way, sign go left along a clear track. Go through a metal gate and when the track ends continue ahead with wire fence on the right. Go through two gates / styles and when fence ends continue ahead along the bottom of the dale.
- At gate / style in wire fence, dale forks (two waymark arrows), go right and stay in the dale bottom, do not climb uphill.
- Continue ahead through gate to enter plantation on wide track.
- At end of plantation the dale forks. Go left, (waymark on post). Continue ahead to eventually climb gently out of the dale and reach A166.
- Cross very busy road with extreme care and at a safe place. to Wayrham Picnic Site.
- Leave the Picnic Site, go left along road. In 40m, go right on road (Scenic Drive).
- In 40m, hidden finger post at corner of wire fence, go right on narrow path to style.
- Continue ahead to cross another style in hedge. Go immediately right, with hedge on right.
- At end of field go right through gate. Go left on clear track through another gate / style to reach unclassified road.
- Go left along road. After 400m finger post on right, go right on clear track, hedge on left.
- Continue ahead, through gate / style, plantation on right.
- Continue ahead, wire fence on left. dale on right. At gateway on left, go right, steep downhill to dale bottom.
- Cross style and go left (ignore waymark ahead / right), to enter private land. Continue ahead, along the dale bottom.
- After about a mile, go left over short, wide wooden bridge to go through a gate. (If you begin climbing, you have missed the turn!)
- Turn left and stay in the dale bottom, Water / stream on left. Do not go uphill.
- Reach and go through wooden gate, Turn right along clear track.
- Givendale Scout Hut is on the left after about 840m.
Stage 6: Givendale Scout Hut to Huggate Wold
- Leave the Hut; Go left to retrace the route to the wooden gate, Continue ahead through a gate, over a wide wooden bridge and through a second gate.
- Continue ahead, uphill with fence and plantation on left. When plantation ends continue ahead uphill to reach wooden gate.
- Go trough the gate. Go right towards farm. Leave farmyard by track to the left, with brick building and cylindrical gas storage tank on right. Continue ahead to reach the road.
- Cross the road. Go down lane opposite signpost Millington %. At cross roads continue ahead.
- Go left at Minster Way finger post, towards College Farm. Go right on clear track to boarded path, hedge on left. Cross style.
- Continue uphill hedge on left, cross style. Continue uphill to cross style in hedge at top of hill to join the Wolds Way. Go left and follow the Wolds Way to Huggate Wold checkpoint.
- Pass Warren Farm on left. Cross farm drive and continue ahead along field boundary, hedge on right. In corner of field, turn left, slightly downhill to cross style on right. Steep downhill to dale bottom; continue ahead, steep uphill on steps to style at top.
- Continue ahead along field boundary, hedge on left. Cross style and go steep downhill to dale bottom hedge / fence on left. Continue ahead uphill, fence on left.
- At Wolds Way finger post, go right. Ahead through gate, metal fence on left.
- At end of fence, go left through gate on left (do not continue ahead). Continue ahead to go through another gate to reach edge of dale. Go right along top of dale, hedge / fence on right. Go through wooden handgate to reach Checkpoint.
Stage 7: Huggate Wold Wetwang Methodist
- Go down the unclassified road to road junction. Go left through handgate into field. Continue ahead along field boundary, hedge on left.
- At track go right. Cross the road with care, continue ahead, down tarmac drive towards Glebe Farm.
- At farm entrance, keep right on Wolds Way, fence and farm on left. Rejoin tarmac farm drive and continue ahead to T-junction. Go left along another tarmac farm drive.
- Just beyond gates and No Parking sign on right. Cross style on right (Chalkland Way finger post) to leave the Wolds Way.
- Continue ahead in dale bottom. Through a metal gate to reach large tree at end of dale, go left, wood on right.
- Stay in dale bottom; do not go follow any uphill tracks. Eventually reach wood on right. At end of wood, continue ahead wire fence on right.
- At end of fence, go left, cross style on right (yellow disk). Go uphill towards another style.
- Cross style, continue ahead, follow fingerpost, diagonally across field, towards another fingerpost.
- Emerge onto very busy road A 166. Go right along wide grass verge facing oncoming fast traffic, alternatively, stay within field using field boundary with hedge on left. At large black barn on right, leave field, cross road with care to footpath on opposite side. Continue ahead to St Paul's Methodist Parish Hall opposite Victoria Inn.
Stage 8: Wetwang Methodist Parish Hall to Garton cross roads
- Leave the Hall, cross the road to Victoria Inn, go left, after about I 20m, before a white building, go right, through metal barriers, to an enclosed footpath, and emerge into a residential street, ahead to T-junction.
- Go left and continue to T junction.
- Go right, the tarmac lane becomes a green lane, continue ahead.
- At T junction, go left along enclosed green lane.
- Cross busy road with care, go ahead (Caeger Castle sign on right) on tarmac lane. Pass pig farm on left and then isolated houses on left to reach Garton Cross Roads.
Stage 9: Garton cross roads to Driffield Showground
- Cross busy road with care onto a wide green lane, at T-junction go left.
- After about 700m, go right down wide green lane, this becomes a track, then a tarmac lane, Elmswell Hall Farm on right.
- Cross very busy main road, A166, with great care to footpath on opposite side. when footpath ends recross road with care to rejoin it on the opposite side.
- Opposite Little Driffield sign on left, use indistinct path across grass on right, hedge on right to reach tarmac road.
- Cross tarmac road to footpath on opposite side, go right into Little Driffield, continuing along main street through village, passing the Rose and Crown on the Left.
- Go through gap in wooden fence and cross busy road A614 with great care, go right on footpath. (The way back to the Showground is the reverse of the start). When footpath ends, (please resist the temptation to continue on grass verge along dangerous road), go left through wooden handgate (footpath sign) to footpath.
- At T junction of paths go right.
- At T junction of paths (wooden fence ahead) go right, to cross two foot bridges.
- When duck boards end, keep ahead to gate in corner of field.
- Go left, and left again through large metal gates into Driffield Showground (ignore wooden gate) and follow marked route to finish.
