Beverley to Welton, via Walkington and Skidby

Mainly along the route of the well signed Beverley 20.

From Beverley leisure Centre turn left towards the level crossing and Minster. At the Minster turn left, (signposted, Howden B1230, Motorway). Keep on ahead with the Minster to your right. Enter Keldgate and continue to the double mini roundabouts. Cross over to enter Cartwright Lane heading towards the Golf Club. Enter the Westwood and just past the hollow on the right before reaching the road sign, turn off right across the grass heading towards Blackmill. Cross a minor road and continue towards the mill. At Blackmill turn left, bearing about 260 across the golf course. Head towards the trees, going right of a silver birch, to pick up a white chalk footpath through a small clump of frees/bushes. Head along the valley (240) to a kissing gate in the wire fence some way to the left of a wooden seat.

You should now follow the Beverley 20 route to Welton Dale 969293. This is clearly marked on Explorer 293, Kingston upon Hull and Beverley. (There is an alternative Beverley 20 route, but the one to follow should be obvious). Please go through Walkington, by turning right (north west) at 009366, Bentley Park. You may take the footpath across the fields from Risby 006347 to Skidby 012336.

Checkpoint 1, near 010333.

Continue along the Beverley 20 to 969293. Here follow the path into the plantation to reach a kissing gate. At the T-junction of paths turn right hedge on left. Look out for a finger post and kissing gate in the hedge on the left. Cross over the concrete road, through a kissing gate into the wood opposite. Keep ahead on a clear, well-defined path that eventually leaves the wood at a kissing gate. Continue ahead along the dale bottom to reach another kissing gate. Take the track slightly to the left passing a cottage and pond on the left. Continue on the track to enter the village of Welton.

Welton to Market Weighton

Mainly along the route of the well signed Wolds Way.

At the end of Dale Road turn sharp right uphill along Kid Lane.

Checkpoint 2, near 954278.

Follow this road until it bends sharp right at the foot of Elloughton Dale. Here keep on ahead through a gate into Peggy Farrow Lane. At the top of the hill follow the path round to the right through the metal bridle gate. When you reach a metal kissing gate, go through and turn left on a good track. At a metal gate across the track turn left, slightly uphill, to follow a public footpath sign. Keep a wire fence on your right to follow the path through a plantation to a kissing gate. Turn left downhill on a tarmac lane, Spout Hill. You should now follow the Wolds Way to its junction with the Hudson Way at 900426. This is clearly marked on Explorer 293, Kingston upon Hull and Beverley (Take care not to follow Spout Hill to the bottom, but to take the footpath on the right to Brantingham Church).

At Mount Airey Farm 935312 turn left through the farmyard and follow the farm road downhill to 933317 to continue on the Wolds Way. Note: the ending of the diversion at Weedley Springs 936330, which was in effect for the first two Woldsman events. Continue on the realigned Wolds Way to the 31230.

Be very careful when crossing the B1230 road. The traffic is frequent and fast. Please use the graveled shoulder track for the short distance to the left turn at the High Hunsley millennium beacon.

Checkpoint 3, near 943355 is on this section of the Wolds Way.

Also be very careful when crossing the 11079 Beverley to York Road at 926414. This is also very busy with frequent and very fast traffic. Give yourself plenty of time to cross.

At 900426, where the road to Goodmanham bends right, go through the gate/gap on the left, to access the old railway track bed (the Hudson Way) and follow it to Market Weighton. As you approach Market Weighton keep ahead on the main path/track, to eventually reach Aspen Close at a three-way finger post. Take the footpath to the left signed Wolds Way.

Checkpoint 4, Market Weighton Community Hall, 877419 is on the right at the end of a low beech hedge.

Market Weighton to Londesborough

Mainly along the route of the well signed Wolds Way

This is clearly marked on Explorer 294 (Market Weighton and Yorkshire Wolds Central). Leave the hall and turn right along a short enclosed footpath, then cross the road to go through a car park.

Turn right to leave Market Weighton by the old York Road. At the last house on the right 872421 go through the kissing gate onto the Wolds Way. You should now follow the Wolds Way to the road at 869447. Turn left up the road, ignoring the fingerpost at the park gates on the right and leaving the Wolds Way for a brief detour into Londesborough. Shortly before the road reaches a T-junction look out for a stile on the right next to a white metal gate. Cross the stile going half left (340) up a slight rise towards a belt of trees. Find and go through a wooden kissing gate onto an enclosed footpath. Go through a handgate to reach a white handgate on the left. Go through, turning sharp right along the fieldside. Checkpoint 5, Londesborough Reading Room, 8684551.

Continue along the route of the well signed Wolds Way.

This is clearly marked on Explorer 294 (Market Weighton and Yorkshire Wolds Central). From the checkpoint go towards the church and turn left to the end of the street then turn sharp right entering Londesborough Park. You should now follow the Wolds Way to Goodmanham at 890432 Be careful at 871453 (finger post) make sure to turn sharp left following the Wolds Way to Goodmanham. Do not head straight on back towards Market Weighton! Also take great care when crossing the A614, traffic is fast and frequent. At the entrance to the picnic site look slightly left for a finger post by a large tree showing the Wolds Way along a fieldside. Where the path forks take care the take the branch going downhill on the left and at the railway bridge go ahead, uphill into Goodmanham. Checkpoint 6, Manor Farm, Goodmanham, 892432.

On leaving the checkpoint turn left up the main street. Regain the Wolds Way by taking the first right down the minor road.

Goodmanham to South Dalton

Part Wolds Way, part Hudson Way, part minor roads.

Continue along the Wolds Way to 899426. Here turn left along the Hudson Way, the track bed of the former Market Weighton to Beverley railway. Stay on this for just over 2 miles to the site of Kiplingcoates Station 929439. This is now Grannies Attic, an antiques emporium. Leave the Hudson Way down the tarmac drive on the left to the road. Cross the road into the minor road opposite signposted Middleton on the Wolds. Follow the road. Go across the cross roads and at 933450 by Fir Tree Cottage turn right on the minor road (Park Lane) towards Dalton Park. After 2 miles reach the Pipe and Glass. They may still be open, but...

Checkpoint 7, South Dalton Village Hall, 966454 is on the left further along the road.

From South Dalton to Leconfield

Part minor roads, part footpath.

Continue up the street from the Village Hall. At the T-junction turn right. Take the first road on the left, soon passing The Mere (a pond). Take care when crossing over the B1248. Turn right at the next T-junction, towards Beverley. At 985452 (fingerpost) turn left down the drive to Moorfield Farm. At the farm keep ahead through a double metal gate on a well defined track. After a left and a right at the end of the hedge keep ahead on this track, following the way markers to a wooden gate at 996456, turn right down a very wide green lane. At a ford the footbridge is to the left. When the track emerges into an open field the hedge is initially on your left. At 000448 you are off the map for about a mile but the route is easy to follow. Alter rounding a small copse the hedge is now on your right. Follow this to reach a raised tarmac lane at a four-way finger post. Turn left along the lane. At the junction of tracks by the sign for Gomary Hall Farm, turn right. On reaching the road, keep on ahead into Leconfield, (Back on the map at 009440). Take the first road on the right signposted to Cherry Burton, Etton. After about 200 yds turn right into the car park.

Checkpoint 8, Leconfield Village Hall, 0084371 is to the left & behind the Recreation Club.

Leconfield to Beverley Leisure Centre

Footpaths, minor roads, railway trackbed.

On leaving the car park turn left to retrace the route to the T-junction. Here go right into Leconfield. If its night time, please remember to respect theresidents' slumbers. At the main road Al 64, keep on ahead (rightish?) towards Beverley. Look out for the footpath sign on the right by the bus stop and Brentwoods Cottage 015435. Go over the stile and follow the footpath to the road at 003424.

The following description may be helpful in the dark. After crossing the stile go over another stile by wooden gate. Go ahead hedge on right. Over another stile by a wooden gate. Over a stile by a metal gate. Turn half left (diagonally across a very muddy field. You may have to skirt round the mire, but resist the temptation to keep on ahead) to find a stile to the right of a metal gate. Ahead, hedge on right. At a belt of trees bear right (do not keep on ahead). Go through a gap and cross a small earth bridge. Ahead for only 10 metres, then right to cross a bigger earth bridge. Turn sharp left (by a waymarker) with a ditch on your left. Follow the ditch round a sharp right bend, keep going to reach a narrow plank footbridge with a metal handrail. Cross over and turn right with the ditch now on your right. Keep ahead to go through a gap and turn sharp left, hedge on your left. At the end of the hedge by an old gatepost turn sharp right across open land. A wire fence & farm buildings are soon reached on your left. At the last farm building turn left to reach the concrete farm drive. Turn right along the drive to the road at 003424.

Turn left along the road to reach the old railway bridge. Use the steps on the right after the bridge to access the trackbed. Turn right towards Beverley, take care not to head back to Market Weighton! Stay on the trackbed for almost 2 miles to cross a footbridge over the main road.

It is now wiser to follow this route description than to navigate using the map.

Keep on ahead passing The Hayride on the left. Cross over a road and keep on ahead. When you reach some playing field on the left cross over a road. (Ignore the finger post sign to Beverley Town Centre) Keep ahead between some low wooden rails. Just beyond the end of the rail on the left, turn sight, down an enclosed footpath by a lamppost. Cross over a road to the clearly signed Rosemary Walk opposite.

Go down Rosemary Walk, ignoring all side turnings and keeping ahead at all road crossings to eventually reach a metal barrier on Manor Road. Cross over and go left for a few yards to find another footpath by the Molescroft sign. Follow this footpath, keeping ahead at all junctions to reach a white kissing gate, giving access to a tarmac drive/lane. Follow this to the main road and turn left to enter Beverley. On reaching the crossroads and traffic lights (There is a pedestrian crossing slightly to the left down Wylies Road). Go ahead under Beverley Bar the old gateway into the town. Pass St. Mary's Church and cross Hengate, then bear left to enter Saturday Market with the Market Cross to your left (There isn't a cross, but a bandstand like structure!). At the far end of Saturday Market enter the Pedestrian Zone. At Skeltons Bakery bear left and soon come into Wednesday Market. Exit Wednesday Market by Eastgate, ahead and to the left (signposted Hull, Friary). Opposite the Minster on the right, turn left down Friary walk. At the end go right, to pass the Friary, which is now a Youth Hostel. Turn right, over the railway footbridge. After the footbridge go right towards the main road. Here turn left, (Beverley Leisure Centre sign). The Leisure Centre is on the left, just past Jewsons.

Congratulations, you have just walked fifty miles to complete the Woldsman.
