From Grove Square go along Love Lane to the Shawl, then along the Shawl following the stiles, emerging on the road, just before Preston-under-Scar (074910). There will be a checkpoint here. If the weather is fine this stretch has some very fine views of Penhill and Lower Wensleydale.
Continue through the Village to the lane at the end and drop through the fields to the road. Continue west on this road towards Redmire for about 400m before taking the footpath slightly down the slope through the stile. This continues through fields and over the railway line, to Elm House, and joins the road again. The route follows the road into Redmire, rather than going through the very small fields near the village. The checkpoint is just off the Village Green in front of the Village Hall (046912).
Follow the main road through the village before taking the lane to the left at the bottom of the village (on the corner near the new houses). Follow this round but do not take the fork to the church. Then, when the track turns sharply to the right, go over a stile and continue through the fields. A large metal 'Kissing gate' gives entrance to a forest track through West Wood. Continue on this track until you see Bolton Hall, taking the track on the right to Lord's Bridge (075892).
Take the path to the right through the fields, bearing left after the third stile to find Back Lane and go up this to West Witton. Walk west through the village. The Checkpoint is at the Methodist Hall on the right. Hot/Cold drinks, toilet.
Continue along the village, past the Wensleydale Heifer pub and turn left towards Chantry Caravan Park, then follow Green Gate to High Lane (direction and no cheating checkpoint 044879). Cross this towards Penhill. As the steepish climb levels out, go through a gate and walk left, keeping fairly close to the wall until you cross a stile in the corner to join Flint Lane (050870). Follow this to Penhill Farm, then go along Common Lane; if the weather permits there are excellent views over the Dale. The major checkpoint has hot food and hot and cold drinks (078875).
Continue along Common Lane to the road junction and cross the road onto Middleham Low Moor (further extensive views). The path across the moor bears little relation to the OS map so keep to the right and join a hard track that parallels the boundary of Cotesque Park and continues past Ever Bank. The checkpoint is not visible till the last minute. Checkpoint direction only (117871).
Cross the road, head towards Braithwaite Hall in the distance, coming to Hullo Bridge crossing the River Cover. Over the Bridge the path now goes along the wire fence at the top of the bank to the left. Go through a stile and gate, and cross the middle of a large field diagonally S.E. (the marker post in the center of the field has been removed so head for the Hawthorn hedge to the right corner). The hedge obscures a wooden footbridge. Follow this footpath through to West Field Lane and fast Witton, joining the road 500m before the village. Checkpoint on the Village Green.
Take the path near the Chapel through to the Cover Bridge Inn. Over Cover Bridge head for Bedale/Spennithorne and cross Ulshaw Bridge. Immediately turn left, through the white 'Kissing gate', and follow the footpath along the Riverbank. Note, this footpath was redirected, so continues one field further than some O.S. maps. Join the road and continue to Spennithorne, taking the track on the corner before the Old Horne Pub. This continues across a footbridge, joins the end of Middleham Lane for a few yards and is marked across the fields with whit posts. At the A6l08 T junction with Low Lane, head straight across the road (signposted to Wensley). Checkpoint Low Lane House, clearly visible from the junction.
After the checkpoint, follow Low Lane for 500m and take the signed footpath on the right. After about four fields, cross towards the left to Low Wood Lane, following this to come out in Leyburn. Go straight ahead, (road signed for Richmond) to the finish at the Wensleydale School.
