Wadsworth Parish Boundary Walk

START AT — Signature Rugs, Pennine Industrial Estate, hebden Bridge (Grid Reference 993275). Turn left out of entrance to go along Valley Road, passing the Medical Centre and Petrol Station as far as the Council Offices. Turn right here and then immediately left towards the Hole in the Wall public house. Turn left around the front of the pub and pass over the old Hebden Bridge Packhorse Bridge. Turn right at the White Swan public house and proceed to the traffic lights. Go straight across the main road and proceed along Holme Street passing the Post Office on your left. At the end of Holme Street bear left and go over the canal bridge to bear left along the canal towpath.

Carry on along the towpath passing Hebden Bridge Marina on your left and Mayroyd Canal Mill lock number 8. Pass through gate in the wall just before the next canal bridge, which takes you over the canal to the main A646 road. THIS IS A MAIN TRUNK ROAD — TAKE CARE WHEN CROSSING!

Take the indistinct path opposite the bridge up the hill towards the Mayroyd Cottages. Go to the right across the tarmac car park area and pass through the gate in the white fence, to pass along the rear of the cottages, bearing right at stone wall to a stile. Pass over the stile and go straight up the field keeping the stone wall on your right, to a marker post. Turn right into the wood and then bear left up through the wood passing a 2nd marker post.

At the top of the wood pass over fence stile. Carry on up field with the wall on your right then turn right, staying on narked path to stone gate-post on left. Pass through field to wooden marker post.

Keeping a row of trees on your left proceed up hill to left hand coiner where field meets wood. Pass over stone stile into old lane turning left up lane and pass through the menagerie of Little Burlees Farm (GR 001271). (Take a moment to view all the different types of animals at this farm).

After Little Burlees Farm turn right along tarmac road passing farm cottages and then continue until Souter House (GR 005270). Continue with the stables on your left to the end of the car park and then take the small path left at the end of the white building which is on your right and before the road starts to dip down hill. Bear right at stone wall and follow path up hill to farm road (Raw Lane). Turn right along Raw Lane passing many small farm buildings and memorial seat (Ronald Gleave) on your left At the end of the lane where tarmac starts (GR 012269) turn sharp left over sole and up rough path (with fine views) following yellow marker posts up to the Heights Road.

Turn right along road for approximately 100 metres then bear left on tarmac public footpath to Wicken Hill Farm. Just before farm buildings take public footpath to the left marked "Churn Milk Joan ¾". Bear right on path around rear of farm buildings to pass over two stiles on to the heather moor and then following the fence on your right go over one more stile on to open moor. On your left at this point - difficult to see though - is an ancient Iron Age dwelling circle.

At the end of the wire fence and where the stone wall starts on your right turn right on Calderdale Way (GR 014275) to Churn Milk Joan stone marker post (GR 019276). Bear right down hill, still following the Calderdale Way markers. Carry on across moorland until a stone wall is reached and follow the path with the wall on your right. Go past the farms on your right then turn right over a stile with a metal farm gate (GR 034274) and proceed left down tarmac road to road junction. Turn left along unmade dirt road for 600 metres to straight on at tarmac road (drinks point here) — carry on past Clough Cottage and other farms on your right.

At Ferney Lee Farm bear left over stile by gate (GR 024283) to moorland path. Carry on straight past the farm keeping wall on your right to wall/tield corner leading up on to open moor, climbing steadily above Luddenden Dean on boggy path.

At the next broken down wall end take the low path keeping wall on your immediate right (GR 019288). Cross stream and bear left uphill (GR 015292). When you reach stone bridge turn left immediately before it as indicated on marker post (GR 013300) and continue over open moorland in a north westerly direction. Continue past stone marker post to Trig point (GR 009303) — this is the highest point on this section. Bear right at Trig point to 316° approximately and follow the path along and down to the A6033 road to lay-by. Checkpoint 1.

From checkpoint walk down the main road for 75 metres and turn right at signpost Howarth Old Road (GR 998310). Go over stile and follow path down to gate, through wall and carry on down to right at tarmac road. After 200 metres turn left at signpost Public Bridleway. Down and over the bridge at the lovely "Lumb Falls" and follow path up hill; bear left after ruined building and then right at signpost "Grainwater Bridge" . Left at ruined farm building (GR 989313) up hill through gate passing one more derelict farm. At the top of walled lane go through gate and hear left along moorland lane. Left through wooden gate into field (GR 983314), follow path with wall on your right down through field on farm track to Walshaw Lodge hamlet. At Walshaw Cottage turn right (GR 974313); up farm lane heading north to check at grass triangle. Checkpoint 2.

After check carry on up farm lane. Turn right at flagstones over stream and signpost "Walshaw Dean" Go through gate (keep dogs on lead) following track up hill with wall on your left; through another gate and carry on up walled track to top gate and on to moorland track (GR 974320). Ignore the footpath to your right immediately through the gate. Bear right at fork in track up hill; take left fork climbing to skyline — passing grouse shooting butts to high point of 422 metres (GR 971326). Go down past two small shooting huts, through gate OR over stone stepped stile. Follow road down to reservoir wall (do not cross dam at this point) but take footpath sign on left along shore of bottom reservoir. Right over lower dam wall. Up to tarmac road and turn left (GR 956330) along grass path (on left of road) or follow road At fork follow tarmac road. At cattle grid take fenced path on left of road. Follow footpath through wooden gate and left around wall to check at car park (GR 947322). Checkpoint 3.

Out of checkpoint turn left along road for 400 metres to (GR 949319) signpost "Pennine Way". Take right through gate and follow path keeping wall on left to fork in path (GR 949317). Leave the Pennine Way here and follow path with the wall on your left. Drop down to Blakedean Scout Hostel (GR 957316) and down road to left at wooden gate before road bridge. Go down the slope to stream and pass over wooden bridge and up hill keeping river and valley on your right; along grass plateau slightly down hill to stile. Over stile to wooded area (GR 964314) into wood and then pick up wall on left and pass through wall at a vertical stone. Follow the path, passing cottage on your left. After cottage carry on for 600 metres along unsurfaced road passing over four small streams. After fourth stream turn right down to river (GR 973309) crossing the river three times over wooden bridges.

Passing over the stone bridge at Gibson Mill bear right along the riverside path and follow this down to stone bridge over river (GR 988290). Turn right over bridge and immediately left passing Midgehole Working Men's Club (locally known as The Blue Pig). At fork, take riverside path signposted "Hebden Bridge". Crossing river once again. cross field and through wooden gate turn left and go up to tarmac road. Turn right along to Rawholme Farm; i.e. first building on right and then take footpath marked "Hebden Bridge". Follow this path until first house on right and go down stepped path before it, straight across dirt road on to riverside path for Hebden Bridge. Cross river by Bowling Club and carry on riverside to cross river once again at Packhorse Bridge. Turn right, then left, passing industrial units and children's play area to finish at Pennine Industrial Estate.
