Leave the main car park in Buckden and go up northwards through Rakes Wood. Continuing along this path we reach Cray Bridge. Checkpoint 1 — GR 943 797 (1.63 miles) and the bucket Drop. Drop one of the red tallies in the bucket.
Turn left down the road to the White Lion Public House, at Cray Pass behind the Inn being careful to close the gates leave Cray on the most pleasant stretch of the walk with good springy turf to walk on and magnificent Views down the Wharfe valley and further up to the head of the dale. There are also large areas of limestone pavements to pass before reaching Yockenthwaite. Cross the bridge to Checkpoint 2 — GR 905 786 (4.98 miles).
Now we carry on over Horse Head Pass (from the Anglo-Saxon. Horse orse). This is the only part of the packhorse track from Hawes to Settle which has not been made into a motor road. Continuing over the pass and descend to Halton Gill. Turn right on the road half a mid: up the road to Foxup Checkpoint 3 — GR 871 767 (8.26 miles).
On leaving Foxup contour round the toot of Plover Hill to Hull Pot an open chasm 300 feet long. 60 feet wide and 60 feet deep And beyond to the checkpoint at the 1 rack Junction. Checkpoint 4 — GR 822 742 (12.17 miles).
From here we climb to the summit of Pen-y-Ghent a Celtic name and the highest point on the walk at 2277 feet above sea level, and on down to Dale lead. Checkpoint 5 — GR 842 714 (15.31 miles).
Follow the minor road in a northeasterly direction and pass the farm at Blishmire eventually picking up a track to Litton on the right after 1.3 miles at GR 855 727 (16.61 miles). Follow track to New Bridge at Litton. Checkpoint 6 — GR (19.46 miles)
Follow the lane to the road and turn right towards Litton, pass in front of the Queens Arms to pick up the track towards Buckden. 'The sting in the tail' of this walk comes as we climb out of Litton on the Buckden track up Birks Fell. hut once on top We can stand and look at the panoramic view, of almost the entire route we have just walked. All that now remains is the easy walk down to Buckden and the finish.
