Emerging from Walk HQ turn right, follow the road under the viaduct and continue into Settle until you reach the Market Square on your left; leave Settle via Constitution Hill (top left corner of the Market Square): Take right hand footpath heading diagonally right uphill between stone walls; after crossing the third wall at a point where the path levels off, strike out to your right on a path heading uphill [SD823642]: Follow this path keeping a wall to your left, then follow the track as it veers right, cross a wall and keep this on your left as you proceed straight ahead; incline right to join another wall and keep this one on your right; go downhill to cross a wall at [SD839642]: Follow the clear path, climbing gently, and then join and follow a wall on your right, until the path reaches a metalled road, where there is the Rain Gauge to your right. This is the location of the 'drop bucket' leave your tally here at [SD847637].
Turn left and follow the road until it turns downhill to Stockdale Farm: Take the footpath heading uphill to your left keeping a wall on your right for a short distance; a clear path continues as you climb along the left side of the valley: Cross two walls at 90 degrees to the path, the second is the entry to the Malham Tarn Estate, you have now completed the climb [SD872638]: At the next wall a finger post [SD875640] points left to Langscar Gate, (the Challenge Walk crosses the wall and continues straight ahead): But the Circuit Walk turns left and you proceed downhill with the wall on your right; cross three more stone walls and you will come to limestone outcrops on your right, before you reach the fourth wall [SD881649]; join the path coming along the wall from your left, turning right along a clear track, which continues downhill until it joins the road at Langscar Gate [SD888649]: Turn left, crossing the cattle grid, and join the road; for the first third of a mile there is open ground to the right of the road, but after the next cattle grid the road is fenced on both sides: KEEP IN SINGLE FILE TO THE RIGHT HAND SIDE FACING ONCOMING TRAFFIC, AND KEEP A CAREFUL LOOK OUT FOR VEHICLES: After a further two thirds of a mile you will reach a cross roads near High Trenhouse Farm [This is the location of the High Trenhouse check point, where refreshments will be available, and is approximately half way. Take the bridleway signposted in the angle of the two roads opposite the check point and head due West: proceed downhill to a stream and then climb up to the first of three walls, with the options of a wicket gate or ladder stile to cross the 1st [SD873660]: Maintain a westerly direction, the exact path is unclear as the area has been much churned up by off-road vehicles, crossing the 2nd [SD869659] and 3rd [SD863657] walls: Proceed downhill, and having crossed a fourth wall by a beck, cross the beck and continue west, passing round the shoulder of a low hill to reach another beck, just by the junction of three walls [SD851658]; (at this point you rejoin the course of the Challenge Walk). Turn left and keeping the wall on your right follow it for approximately one mile; just after the stretch where the wall runs along the top of a rocky outcrop for some yards, there is a ladder style to your right [SD835655]: Cross the wall by means of the style and follow the path straight ahead of you; follow it downhill to where the path meets a farm track by a cattle grid; the final Junction FP/Road check point is between the gateway in the farm track and the road which leads downhill to Langcliffe. Leaving the check point in the direction of Langcliffe take the footpath which climbs away to your left just before the Langcliffe road; follow this in a southerly direction along the side of the hill: After about half a mile another path comes up the hill from Langcliffe to join the main path; continue straight ahead, it becomes a farm track, and about one third of mile from the footpath junction you will see, to your left, the path you took at the beginning of the walk climbing towards Malham [SD823642]: Continue straight ahead to the top of the path, which leads downhill between stone walls to Constitution Hill and Settle Market Square; turn right at the bottom of the Market Square and proceed under the viaduct to the Walk HQ on your left.
