From Butterton Village Hall TR then L along road to pass Church on your L. Take R fork (Public House now on LHS). Bear R at RD junction, passing Post Office on LHS. Continue west along RD to T junction (B5053) at GR062566.
Cross RD take TK opposite. Turn L at bottom onto stony TK. Down TK to Black Brook Farm. Enter yard and pass between house and barn. Keeping fence on your R cross brook to reach ST.
Cross field on BRG 10° to ST and footbridge. Up steps in bank. Ahead now on faint path, keeping gully and brook on your L. Through two fields to ST. Continue heading towards Breech Farm. Over ST to RD.
Over RD towards finger post. Take BRG 285° going up and over bank. Cross RD to finger post and ST opposite. Cross TK now on BRG 3 1 0" to ST. Continue down field passing through two gap ST to reach a metal gate and finger post.
Continue (N) with wire fence & lake on L. Through two wall ST to gate. Continue in same direction through wooden gate at side of cattle grid.
Through next gate & head north, passing New York Farm, to Royledge Farm (with brown shutters). Go L of buildings. Through gate. Across field (BRG 335°) and over wall ST.
Keep wall & wire fence on L to go over two ST with TK in between. Ahead keeping wall on L then over ST between cottage and outbuildings.
Over ST at rear of cottage, across field and through wall ST. Keep wall on L and go R of farm and stream. Pass between barns on R. Turn R and head north towards low buildings on skyline.
Through ST on R of gate, then follow TK to RD. Turn L on RD towards The Mermaid pub. Turn L at junction, pass pub car park then turn R through gate.
Follow broad, grassy track to FP signs. Take L path (SP Hurdlow Farm) & follow marker posts across moorland to wall ST. Over ST, follow TK downhill and head for gate on R of small plantation. Down TK and through Hurdlow Farm.
Continue down TK & at SP bear R down field (BRG 300°) to reach footbridge and cross River Churnet.
Turn L and bear L up bank opposite then up field keeping hedge, then wall on L. Go through gate on L to reach tunnel under main RD. Up rough track to the Rock Inn car park.
CP 1 Rock Inn — GR013609 (6 miles).
Down RD turning R at RD junction. Turn R before bridge and up TK between houses. Continue up TK to pass through gate to reach derelict buildings. Go L of derelict building and take the lower wide path keeping the stream on your R.
Bear L around rock outcrop, keeping derelict barn on your R. Over ST ahead keeping wall on your L to reach TK.
Ahead up TK (N) towards farm. Take the ST on L before farm gates. BR following SP 'FP to Roaches'. Head to L of farm buildings & over ST in corner. Cross field to next ST.
Cross field to ST then turn L for a few yards before turning R to go up between rock outcrops. Through gap ST and at the top forward with rocks on your R. Turn R at sign "Roaches Estate" and keep broken wall on R. L at the start of the Roaches ridge.
Head north following the ridge for approx ½ mile to descend to the RD at Roach End (GR995645). Cross RD and pass through ST.
Forward on good path along ridge, keeping wall on L. At small SP in centre of path turn R (Lud's Church). Continue to next SP. Turn L.
After passing through Lud's Church head west to next SP. TR to Gradbach (east). Continue to reach river Dane and footbridge (GR 991658).
Over footbridge then up TK and L through wall ST. Down TK between fences with river on your L, over ST on R. Continue over further ST to reach Gradbach Youth Hostel. Head up RD then descend to reach car park and checkpoint.
CP 2 Gradbach — GR 999662 (12 miles).
Ahead through car park and after about 200yds turn L, over footbridge. Turn R along field edge with river on L. Over wall ST to RD and turn R. Up RD then through first gate on L.
Through gate on R of tree. Ahead keeping wall on L to cross five fields. In next field when wall turns L go straight ahead in the direction of farm. Over ST in wall. Continue ahead to gate. Ahead on BRG 355° to reach open gateway.
Up field keeping wall on your L. Over TK. Follow wall around to the L. Over broken wall in the corner and head towards barn. Follow TK L around barn to reach open gateway, Turn L down walled TK. Pass FP sign "Three Shire Heads", stay on TK, through a wooden gate then to Three Shire Heads (GR009686).
At bridge turn R through metal gate. Follow brook on your R. Do not turn R at first footbridge. Continue around to the L up TK with brook still on R. Through metal gate and after 100yds turn R (BRG 160°) up bank. Take gravel TK to the L of the farm.
Stay on TK over Knotbury Common to ladder ST over wall on L. Ahead on BRG 75°. Over wall and head for building. Pass FP sign by gate to reach lane. Ahead up lane opposite. Take gravel TK to the R as you pass Lower Drystone Farm. Continue up TK, through gate to reach Middle Drystone Farm.
Pass in front of the farm house and go past the wooden sheds, now on grass path to wooden kissing gate. Head towards Upper Drystone Farm. Take the lower path to a gravel drive. Turn R and follow this to reach main road (GR 033689).
Cross main RD (A53 Take Care). Cross to farm opposite & take hidden wall stile to L of gate. Into yard. Take small gate to L of the shed. Then go to the L of the stables. Head down field into a gully. Over two ST. At the third ST turn R up drive to reach minor RD (GR 040688).
Cross RD & up TK opposite. At top turn R & continue along TK. Turn L in front of Old School House. At minor RD turn R (Brand Top GR 043685). Continue as RD becomes TK. At rear of farm house on R head diagonally R across field. Keep to L of barn. Head for ST in wall (wooden posts visible first).
Follow grassy TK and keep high BRG 150°, aiming for ST in wall on skyline. Follow path on LHS of River Dove, eventually descending to cross ST & stone clapper bridge over tributary to main river. Continue on path with river on your R to pass through small wooden gate. Turn R down stony TK to cross packhorse bridge.
Cross small stream and over ST. Follow path now on RHS of River Dove. Pass derelict barn. Follow grassy path, keeping valley & broken wall on L. Through ST in wall. Continue with wall on L to reach wooden gate onto RD. Turn L down RD to Hollinsclough (GR 065665). CP in village hall on R.
CP 3 Hollinsclough — GR 065665 (18.5 miles).
Turn L at RD junction in village. Follow RD for 400yds. Turn L down farm TK, passing over cattle grid. Along TK to reach FP sign. R on TK and continue.
Over footbridge then over cattle grid between stone columns. Continue then bear R. Opposite ST in RHS fence, leave RD and bear L across field (BRG 95°). Over ST next to metal gate and continue ahead over 2 more ST to RD. Cross RD to ST.
Bear L across field to wall ST and then over ST at top of hill, over ST and through gate opposite. Across field and head for church. Through ST in wall. Through another 2 ST to the Quiet Woman at Earl Sterndale.
TR and take path SP "Crowdecode". Through ST. Over next ST and continue keeping wall on L. Over wall ST. TL keeping wall on L. Down bank following faint path (BRG 150°). Through ST in wall. Follow path leading down hill. Cross stile and head for building and turn L along TK.
After farm then barn, through metal gate and where TK bends turn R over stile by SP (BRG 240°). Over footbridge (Beggar's Bridge). Follow faint path up and over hill and head for building, keeping wall on L. Turn L around rear of building. R up TK for 120yds.
Over ST on R before gate, Follow zigzag path to top of hill. Over ST then diagonally R to metal gate to sunken TK. Down TK and ahead at XRD (Queen St) to reach Longnor village centre (GR 089649).
Cross field on BRG 260° to RD. Turn L on RD. At Heath House Farm (GR 081645) take 2nd entrance on L into yard. Turn R along shed and L at end. Follow BRG 200° to reach ST in wall by FP sign on the bank.
Over ST, now on BRG 220° head up bank to ST by finger post. Cross field on BRG 212° to gate and ST. On to RD and turn L.
Turn R at RD junction and over ST on L by finger post. Take BRG 180° to go R around house following the boundary to reach footbridge. Diagonally L to gap ST.
Ahead to metal gate (waymarker post). Over ST, diagonally R and on to next ST. Head to R of house to FP sign at Hall Hill.
Go between the house and barn into the farmyard. Take ST ahead and down field to telegraph pole. Continue in same direction, down field, heading between two standing stones. Keep hedge on R to ST. Then continue in same direction to further ST and footbridge.
Go up bank to Boosley Grange Farm (GR 068625). At top of bank TL in front of buildings to reach FP sign. Turn R to ST in fence. Over this and next ST to cross ST in wall. Go down field with hedge on the R. Over ST and stream.
Continue with hedge on R until the hedge bends off to the R. Follow BRG 130° and head across open field to a metal gate with ST and FP sign.
Forward to wooden gate. Continue up field, keeping wall on R to ST before footbridge. Continue in same direction onto gravel TK which leads onto RD (GR 079611).
Turn R along RD then take first L onto a Tarmac lane. This becomes a stony TK as you pass 'Cuckoostones' and reach checkpoint.
CP 4 Revidge Wood — GR 078604 (26 miles).
Take the L fork, (GR 079605) continuing on TK to descend to reach 'Hayes'.
Follow SP for 'Hulme End' through farmyard. Through gate on R. Head for gateway in field corner (BRG 120°). Continue ahead (BRG 115°) across rough open field to small gate in wall. Bear slightly R across next field keeping wall on L. Through gate and onto track down to RD (B5053) GR 090599.
Turn R on RD for 250yds. Opposite FP on R take gap stile on L by metal gate. Cross field on BRG 110°. Over ST and keep wire fence on L. As fence goes L, straight on and through two more ST. BR to ST onto road. Turn L along RD for 275yds. Turn R. to reach car park.
Follow old tarmac railway track for approximately 1 mile to reach RD. L on RD. R at RD junction and almost immediately L up TK (SP "Top of Ecton").
On reaching turreted house, turn L on green TK. Over ST. Follow TK uphill keeping wall on L. At old mine building over ST on L, TR & over next stile," keeping broken wall on L to next stile. Follow terraced path to gap in wall. Ahead keeping wall on L.
Through ST in broken wall. Ahead to ST on R at derelict mine buildings.
CP 5 Ecton Hill — GR 102578 (29.5 miles).
Through right hand ST. Keep wall on L. Through gate in wall to Broad Eaton Farm. Turn L on TK. When TK swings L go through wooden gate by metal gate on R. Then keep wall on R. Over ST by gate.
Ahead, first with wall on R then on L followed by fence on L. Through wall stile, then L over ST by gate and descend into valley to reach farm.
Down farm TK and over bridge. Ahead at XRD. Turn R before ford. Through gate into field. Ahead over ST on R of gate. Follow valley on RHS of river.
Through small gate in wall. Ahead with river on L. Ahead to wooden ST with stone steps on R (after small wooden plank bridge). Through this ST on R (SP Butterton).
Ahead, keeping "Hoo Brook" on L. Through two broken walls. Over ST in further fence. Ahead to ST beside the SP. Over ST and cross brook by stepping stones.
Ahead in same direction but with brook now on RHS. Over three ST. Continue along river bank through gap in wall and over wooden ST (house on R). Cross stream. Turn L onto access track and in 50yds reach road.
Turn R on RD to cross ford. Up RD to "Y" junction. Take the right fork. In 25yds turn R onto a tarmac drive. Where drive turns R, keep ahead on enclosed path. At next junction turn L on enclosed path. In 150yds turn R up three steps and over ST. Continue ahead over further ST then ST on L to reach RD and Village Hall.
Finish — GR 079566 (33 miles & 5210 ft).
