A Lancum Walk

  1. Through stile by car park & follow footpath up through wood.
  2. Fork left then right in direction of yellow markers, along wood bottom.
  3. 400yds fork right at white arrow on post & follow the next two posted arrows (ignoring arrow on tree).
  4. At fork, go left (white arrow) & keep on up good path. At stone seat, continue uphill.
  5. Straight ahead on good path through gateway in wall & when path forks keep right (white arrow).
  6. In 50yds take scree path (i.e. fork left at white arrow on tree. Continue to 'Pepper Pot' (SD 461 761).
  7. Take note of village church & scramble down scar in this direction. Head left on faint path for 50yds.
  8. Then take path on right continuing downhill, past dead hedging, keeping right at fork.
  9. Turn right at white wicket gate on lane to road (SD 462 759.
  10. At tarmac, go across, down lane (SP Cove Road) & on to Wallings Lane.
  11. At tarmac, go straight on down lane opposite (SP to The Cove).
  12. Keep straight on at the road to take footpath on right (SP Far Arnside).
  13. Keep along path to left by trees, bushes & building.
  14. Follow SP (Far Arnside) & straight on at tarmac.
  15. 50yds left on yellow markered FP & take path across fields.
  16. Across road down tarmac lane (SP Far Arnside) & ahead through caravan site (SP White Creek).
  17. Take 'No Entry' track & gravel path beyond & at SP, bear left, down hill.
  18. Keep to cliff top path. At SP (White Creek) fork right, keeping wall to left.
  19. Left at next junction & take track form caravan site to 'New Barns'.
  20. Follow road (SP Arnside) and take footpath off to right (SP Arnside Knott) through kissing gate.
  21. Keep to main path through wood & up hill. Straight across path junction & ahead downhill at bottom.
  22. Turn left along facing wall & through gate 50yds.
  23. Straight ahead at NT sign (SP Arnside Tower).
  24. Cross road & down to farm buildings. Take path to left in front of Tower, bear right.
  25. Through gate & ahead on FP through wood.
  26. Left fork at SP (Blackdyke), keeping railtrack on right.
  27. Under rail bridge (SP Hazelslack) & at 2 stiles in wall take right one following track/road to farm.
  28. Beyond farm right at T-junction (SP Silverdale).
  29. 100yds left up FP (Leighton Beck), take FP (signed) off lane to right.
  30. Path goes left over footbridge. Left on road for 500yds (SD 489 774) [Checkpoint].
  31. Leave checkpoint by stile across road & follow obvious track through gates.
  32. Eventually after 4th gate, track has a newish wire fence on its left.
  33. Take gate 30yds on & follow wall on right.
  34. Bear left on well defined path/track straight on to meet road SP (Yealand Redmayne).
  35. 400yds FP on left SP (Eight Acre Lane) — NB double signpost.
  36. Go straight down field parallel with wall on right & across next field.
  37. Turn right along metalled track path goes straight on.
  38. When main track turns right go straight on over 2 stiles.
  39. Through gate, follow yellow marker on left to stile at field end & across field to stile by large tree.
  40. Left along road. Right down lane opposite house.
  41. Right along road, 200yds left up lane over railway bridge & canal.
  42. Then diagonally left to stile 50yds to right of power cables.
  43. Straight up field to stile. Go up field & down & across motorway bridge to Burton.
  44. First left (Tanpitts Lane), straight across cross roads (Vicarage Lane.
  45. After approx 200yds at (SD 533 768) leave route by going right rather than left.
  46. FOLLOW DEVISED ROUTE TO (SD 532 741).
  47. Continue to road (Priest Hutton) & go out of village to right SP (Burton).
  48. Left onto lane (350m). Over canal bridge, take towpath on right, going past picnic area.
  49. Under motorway bridge rejoin towpath.
  50. At bridge take path off to left SP (Leighton Hall).
  51. Follow track up to gateway, round right edge of field to gate by farm buildings, follow track to road.
  52. Going straight across road, up lane to [passing checkpoint SD 504 747].
  53. Left at T-junction then take footpath on right after 10yds.
  54. Continue uphill via yellow markers — using stiles!!!
  55. Follow old FP sign (Leighton Moss). Continue uphill via yellow marker to cairn.
  56. Straight on to Leighton Hall taking lane behind tennis courts & straight on after farm buildings.
  57. Take right fork at loose track (through gate onto Leighton Moss Causway.
  58. Right on road at end of marsh. Follow track through gate on left to stile in field corner.
  59. Across golf course to stile & left along track beyond.
  60. AT ROAD (SD 475 578) LEAVE ROUTE & turn left, ahead & left along road back to car park.
