Humber Bridge Link

The route has been amended (Jan 2005) following the closure of Terrace Plantation near Melton Bottom Quarry due to road works.

Start at 027 254 -Viewpoint on foreshore east of Humber Bridge.

Go west along the river Humber bank 1, under the Bridge, past North Ferriby and Welton Water to 954 248. Turn north following the Beverley 20, cross the railway at Welton Crossing, and the A63 2 by the footbridge.

Proceed into Welton. Walk past the church, past the telephone box (GR 960 274), north along Dale Road, through and out at the top of Welton Dale (GR 968 293).

Right then left to Wauldby Manor Farm and dam (GR 970 298).

Right to Little Wauldby Farm and Great Gutter Lane (GR 990 293).

Right to footpath sign on right (GR 988 291) - take care along this busy road.

Right along path to Welton Wold Farm (GR 969 292). Turn left after farm and follow path south-west with plantation on right to 966 279.

Down this lane (Stonepit Lane) past Bow Road (GR 965 277). Go ahead down Chapel Hill Lane, left into Holly hill and left again to Welton Old Road. Follow this, with South Hunsley School on your right to the A63 2. Cross by the footbridge (GR 979 263) and left to the top of Long Plantation.

Through Long Plantation and over the railway bridge to the Humber Bank at North Ferriby (GR 983 251).

Left along the river bank 1 towards the Humber Bridge. Left at the old mill, under the railway line and follow the path up the steps on the bridge and over to Barton-upon-Humber. This is the finishing point of the Viking Way (GR 008 234).

Right here along the metalled road in a westerly direction and on to Chowder Ness (GR 008 234). Follow the footpath south west to South Ferriby Cliff (GR 997 222) and so to South Ferriby (GR 988 209).

Cross the road at South Ferriby with caution, following the Viking Way signs, up the hill with the church on your right (GR 989 208). Carry on in a southerly direction with a quarry on your left along a green lane to Horkstow Road junction (GR 990 188). Turn left here uphill with farm buildings on the left to 006 194, turn right and south east to GR 013 184, then left along a road, turning left at 024 188 then follow the road and then track through Kingsforth to GR 033 188.

Turn left and left again to Barton and so over the Humber Bridge to return to Hessle.

1 A short section of the path a North Ferriby (GR 985 252) is impassable for approximately 2 hours at high tide. Telephone 01482 223344 (09.30-16.30) for tide times and walk the northern loop in reverse if necessary.

2 Road works to the A63 at Welton may cause some disruption (Jan 2005 for 18 months).
