R. on Settle road, over river then after hairpin bend through gate on R. and up to stile by gate at end of field. Continue on R. of field boundary and through next gate on L. Continue on L. of field boundary down to minor road. Take track to BROADHEAD FARM. L. through gate and along L. of stream, through two further gates. Soon over footbridge on L. and immediately over wall stile on R. Still keeping to L. of stream, eventually to go over wall stile and join track to HARROP HALL. Keep to L. of buildings and L. of boundary wall, ahead to stile and continue on R. of stream to HARROP LODGE. Keep to L. of buildings and continue on R. of hedge to track G.R. 747502. Cross to stile then keep to R. of stream and field boundary. Shortly after stream turns L. over wall stile on L. and head for gate to the L. of farm ahead, (HARROP GATE). R. on track then L. through gate and head for SMALDEN HOUSE ahead, initially crossing stile and footbridge, over two further stiles, then through yard and gate on L. Then R. diagonally to far corner of field, to gate and road. R. for about 150 yards and over wall stile on L. Ahead to gate on L. of COTTAMS. Through gate to further gate on R. and downhill to footbridge, keeping to R. of wall. Now keep to L. of wall, passing house (WHITE STONES), G.R. 762492. Continue to brow of hill, then over two stiles and two fields to stile on R. of wooden shed ahead. Downhill on R. of wall, passing on R. of farm (PRIEST BIGGINS). Continue on R. of wall and just after next farm (FAT HILL FARM), bear R. to gate and continue downhill on track on R. of wooded stream. As track turns L. by house go through gate ahead and aim for L. of barn ahead, over stile and L. into HOLDEN. R. over bridge and continue on road to just before bridge at BOLTON-BY-BOWLAND. Turn R. on track (S.P. Sawley) to CHECKPOINT G.R. 783493. (6 Miles).

Continue on track and as track turns L. to farm, over wall stile ahead and follow white footpath signs through field and over stile. Continue in southerly direction over further stile and through kissing gate, over further stile, then cross stream by footbridge G.R. 780481. Continue in southerly direction over two stiles, the second one in the far R. hand corner of the field, then to stile by River Ribble. Continue, bearing R. across field, following white marker stones to cross footbridge, L. and follow path to bridge and L. into SAWLEY. Take R. hand stile opposite SPREAD EAGLE HOTEL, then on 148° over two stiles to lane. Cross and continue up enclosed path to stile by A59. Cross road (CAUTION) to stile opposite and bear L. across field to gate and then stile. Then on R. of field boundary to stile and downhill across field to further stile (aim for copse of trees on hillside in front of you). Downhill to packhorse bridge, then over wall stile.

Continue diagonally R. across field to footbridge, then keep to R. of field boundary, parallel to railway, through gate to barn, where paths divide G.R. 782452.

YOUR CHOICE IS NOW TO COMPLETE EITHER 23 OR 31 MILES. (9.5 Miles).

23 MILE ROUTE ONLY (31 MILERS IGNORE THIS SECTION).

Pass in front of barn and through gateway to continue on R. side of field boundary, along track and over railway bridge, to continue on track. Then on L. side of field boundary to road. R. over by-pass, then first R. Continue to end of road and cross main road through village to CHECKPOINT at CHATBURN INSTITUTE G.R. 769442 (10.5 MILES).

23 MILE ROUTE CONTINUED

R. out of Institute and take path on R. side of BROWN COW pub and houses. Downhill, and bear L. to stile amongst hawthorn trees in corner of field, then over footbridge to road. R. and after about ¼ mile take footpath on L. (S.P. WEST BRADFORD) along edge of wood, then continue by R. Ribble, crossing road, to eventually reach BRUNGERLEY BRIDGE G.R. 739429.

31 MILE ROUTE ONLY (23 MILERS IGNORE THIS SECTION).

L. on track under railway, continuing to pass through gate on R. of farm and through gate to road. Cross to stile, then keep to edge of wood, then downhill past front of cottage to road. R. into DOWNHAM, L. downhill to CHECKPOINT G.R. 785442. CLOSES AT 11-00 A.M. (10 Miles).

31 MILE ROUTE CONTINUED Over bridge, L. then take track on R. of stream (Downham Beck). After stile continue on R. of stream for approximately 100 yards, before striking out to the R. initially following a line of trees, to stile in corner of field on R. of stream (ignore the stile on L. in the short section of wall). Keep on R. of stream, over further stile, then over footbridge in copse of trees. After a short distance through stile on L. and head for L. of CLAY HOUSE buildings G.R. 794437, over stile then R. through yard to take track to road. L. uphill and after road turns L. at plantation, through kissing gate on R. opposite barn. Follow path (not on all O.S. maps) uphill over two stiles, then more steeply uphill on track, eventually crossing stile or through gate to continue ahead on path to PENDLE SUMMIT G.R. 804414. On 275° head across moorland for approx. 650 yards to wall by infant OGDEN BROOK (you must be very precise on this bearing). L. for short distance and when wall turns R. follow on L. of wall on 335° past gate to top of northern escarpment G.R. 795418. L. on 240°, keeping on edge of escarpment to substantial shelter, then on 230° (keep to high ground) to reach large Scout cairn. Then initially on 180° round head of MEARLEY CLOUGH on clear path to eventually cross broken wall. Continue straight ahead on 215° on L. of wall and when wall turns R. continue ahead downhill (Ashendean Clough away on L.) Eventually the path swings round to R. but take narrow path on L. initially on 200°, steeply downhill to cross the lower reaches of ASHENDEAN CLOUGH. Continue gradually uphill on narrow path to CHECKPOINT at WELLSPRINGS INN. G.R. 772390 (16 Miles).

31 MILE ROUTE CONTINUED Uphill to gate on R. (just before summit of road). Follow track downhill to stile by gate, over, thhen continue down track to stile in wall on R. Aim for wall stile on R. of WYMONDHOUSES. Continue ahead, keeping on L. of line of trees to gate and stile, R. to further gate and stile, then L. along R. of field boundary. After about 200 yards bear R. downhill to footbridge. L. and follow on R. of line of trees and stream to road. L. through PENDLETON to A59. Cross (CAUTION) and continue on lane opposite (S.P. STANDEN HALL), over minor road to beginning of wooded track G.R. 748401. Continue on track to kissing gate on L. Follow path across field to further kissing gate, then keep to L. of field boundary to road. Cross road (CAUTION), R. and in 60 yards L. to farm. At rear of farmhouse, immediately R. down track to road, L. and 30 yards after sharp R. turn, acutely L. on track between buildings (S.P. GOODS INWARD GRAHAM BRACEWELL LTD.) Continue on track, initially passing substation on L. then over stile by gate, continuing on R. of fence. When over next stile by gate, leave track and bear R. to go over stile under viaduct G.R. 734406. Continue on R. of stream to stile, then follow footpath to R. of house and road. Continue on track opposite and in 60 yards when track turns L. ahead through gate and follow RIBBLE WAY sign to further gate in far R. hand corner of field to river. Follow on R. of river and L. of caravan / camp site and 80 yards before miniature railway (where hedge is at right angles to river), turn R. Continue on L. of hedge, cross track and continue on footpath (S.P. To Car Park) to CHECKPOINT in CAR PARK G.R. 729415 (20.5 Miles).

31 MILE ROUTE CONTINUED Cross road and R. towards church. Pass church and immediately after B.P. GARAGE L. over stile and along enclosed footpath. At junction of tracks, continue on path between hedges, over stile, then continue on R. of field boundary. Over two further stiles, then bear R. across field to stile, then bear R. again to gate in corner of field. DO NOT GO THROUGH GATE. Over stile on L. of gate, and continue on L. of field boundary to R. hand corner of field, then L. Continue on L. of hedge, over stile to weir. R. and follow footpath by river to BRUNGERLEY BRIDGE G.R. 739429.

BOTH ROUTES NOW Over bridge and after approximately 100 yards, over stile on L. to join metalled track to WADDOW HALL. At gateway to hall keep to R. of wall on footpath to join track to road. R. on road into WADDINGTON taking footpath on R. just before Parish Church to Memorial Gardens, over small bridge and L. on road to CHECKPOINT at ST. HELEN'S SUNDAY SCHOOL G.R. 728440 (15.5 Miles or 23.5 Miles).

L. out of hall and L. past HIGHER BUCK INN, over bridge and in approximately 100 yards, over wall stile on L. (between the almshouses and farm). In a northerly direction straight ahead to stile by gate. Keep to R. of field boundary then on R. of wood, passing on L. of FEAZER FARM G.R. 727451. Continue (DO NOT GO DOWN TRACK), keeping on edge of wood to eventually cross footbridge and uphill between new houses to track at MILL FARM. R. on track past CUTTOCK CLOUGH FARM and SEEDALLS to where track turns R. G.R. 731461. Turn L. through gate and uphill on track, past barn on R. and through two further gates. Soon the track swings R. then L. after which there are two more gates. After the second one G.R. 727473 turn R. on track to remains of plantation G.R. 734481. L. on track and when wall turns L. take lower track on L. Uphill, and in 150 yards through gateposts in wall. Continue on track 282° to metal stile in wall, then continue a further 650 yards, passing "The Wife" (Pile of Stones) away on R. to junction of tracks at G.R. 722483. (The alternative at this stage is to continue on the main track to Walloper Well and walk on the road via Newton to Slaidburn).

Continue by turning acutely R. on track for 200 yards to "Old Ned" (Second Pile of Stones). Then on a bearing of 322° over pathless moorland, eventually joining faint track which gradually becomes clearer. (DO NOT STRAY ON THIS SECTION - THERE ARE ONE OR TWO BOGS IN THE AREA). Continue on track passing tam away on L. to top of escarpment, then down to gate at G.R. 716493. On 350° continue downhill to gate on L. side of barn, then keeping to L. of field boundary to stile. On 328° across field to further stile. Now L. of field boundary to gate, then on R. of field boundary and over concrete bridge to pass through farmyard to road at EASINGTON. R. for 100 yards then L. through gate opposite barn, then R of field boundary for 150 yards to kissing gate. Across field, keeping well left of wood on 292° to pass over footbridge. Straight ahead to bridge over River Hodder to join track past DUNNOW HALL to road. R. to Youth Hostel and finish.
