Donny's Railways Walk

  1. On reaching M18 turn left and go past underpass. Follow main track until you reach a 'T' junction with a wide lane. Turn right towards the road at Stump Cross.
  2. Turn left and carry on down the hill until just before the motorway bridge. Turn left down the lane between the farm house and the old gate house.
  3. Follow the lane, turning right down the more minor track near the site of the Old Averley Grange passing the old station and caravan site. Shortly reaching Broomhouse Lane.
  4. Now take the lane almost directly opposite and follow this turning right at the 'T' junction and continuing up the lane past the playing fields and park.
  5. At the top end of the park a path leads left alongside a high wall, this brings you out onto Low Road West. Here turn left again up to the Warmsworth lights and Cecil public house.
  6. From the Cecil cross the Sheffield Road and proceed down Mill Lane, you will arrive at a small woodland where you follow the path through the wood bearing left.
  7. Cross the road with care and take the path through the steel barrier down to the River Don.
  8. Once over the river and canal turn left and after 50yds left again down some steps to the canal bank.
  9. Follow this under the bridge and past Sprotborough Locks and along the river bank towards Doncaster.
  10. Follow the river under the motorway and two railway bridges until the path becomes constricted between some old lagoons and a steep bank. (Bank under mined??)
  11. Consider using path round back of Newton.
  12. Once you have passed Newton continue along the floodbanks, turning left before the arched bridge and left again following the path around the old cut of the Don at the next floodbank junction.
  13. Continue under the concrete bridge and straight on to St Mary's Bridge and the Don Cinema.
  14. From the Old Don Cinema situated at the end of North Bridge go up Bentley Road under the railway bridge and then first right along Hunt Lane.
  15. At the sharp bend turn right along Ings Lane over two level crossings continuing for ½ mile where you turn left down the first narrow lane.
  16. After a few hundred yards you will reach the floodbank, crossing the stile on your right continue along the bank for the next 2½ miles crossing one lane.
  17. When you reach the second lane turn right (do not cross the stile straight ahead) and keep to the land between the spoil heaps heading for Thorpe Marsh Power Station at every opportunity.
