CAVENDISH 27 MILE CIRCUIT

Start at Cavendish Cafe GR075541, cross the wooden footbridge and follow the river bank down to the Bolton Priory Footbridge via the woodland footpaths. Cross the footbridge and follow the river bank left to Bolton Bridge GR 072.528. Turn right at the Bridge. Proceed  to the Devonshire Arms Hotel and proceed up the lane opposite the Hotel and pass through the RH field gate which is the start of the bridlepath to Draughton. Continue to the A59 down the steps, across the road and up the steps at the other side to continue on the bridlepath.

 

Cross the old Railway Bridge and up to the farm gate, marked F.P and B.P follow the B.P through the next two gates, downhill, over the beck and up the walled grass lane into Draughton GR 039:525.

 

Turn right through the village to the footpath sign on the left to ‘Skipton - Harrogate Road', turn left up the lane and cross the stone stile on the right before the field gate. Cross the field keep near the wall, under the O/H cables and drop down to the beck crossing it near the top of the gulley. Follow the wall on your left beyond, the gate and through the stile in the wall 300 yards further down on and down diagonally across the stile to the A59 Skipton Road. Cross the road, through the stile, by the telegraph poles and down to the old railway bridge. Cross the bridge and the wooden stiles to the left to join a beck running through the field, follow the beck right to the road and through the field gate opposite into a green lane bridlepath to rejoin the lane into Eastby GR 017544.

 

Turn left at the road, pass through the village and take the footpath on the left running diagonally through the fields to the church. 50 yards past the church on the right approaching the village pass through the little wooden gate and follow the footpath parallel to the village of Embassy GR 010.538 to rejoin the road opposite the mill dam. Or follow the same FP to the village car park and turn right through the village passing the Elm Tree Pub and the old 17th century Mansion House and Mill Pond to join the previous route where it joins the road. Turn, right at the road and on the left just past the dam follow the footpath sign to' None Go Bye' over the two footbridges, up the hill and behind the farm buildings of Hill Top and over a series of stiles past Oddacres Farm and continuing with the stone wall to the right over more stiles and past a ruined barn to Hagg Farm. Cross the farm track through a wooden gate and diagonally across the small field Follow the wire fence and railway lines on your left to a wooden stile near the wire fence (this section is an official diversion ). Continue diagonally across the field, over a stone stile to the left of the field gate to join the farm track. Follow the track and over the railway crossing, pass Hagg Farm on the left to join the Skipton - Grassington Road at 'None Go Bye' farm GR 977545. Turn left along the main road for 300 yards before tuning right up the hill to the car parking area for Flasby Fell. Turn right through the field gates to the moor edge and bear right at the F.P sign to follow the ridge up to the trig. point at Sharp Haw GR959533.

 

From the trig, point follow the wall on the right to an un-gated opening, pass through and follow the path down the hill through the next wall and turn left following the contour of Rough Haw, before dropping down to Flasby village GR 948566. Before entering the village turn right along the lane marked Hetton and Rylstone F.P up past Flasby Moor Side Farm, to the F.P sign, leave the track bearing left, continue through the two field gates.

 

Continue down the field, over the footbridge and under the railway bridge through the field to the top LH comer of the plantation. Climb the stile and cross through the fields to join the track which eventually joins the Hetton to Rylstone Road. Turn right up the road cross the Skipton - Grassington Road and follow the lane past the Church, pass through the little wooden gate, along the footpath and bridleway into Cracoe village GR 978.602. Pass the cafe and Devonshire Arms Hotel and continue on the road turning right at the next minor junction for Thorpe, until the occupied house on the left at Far Langton is reached. Opposite the house, cross the wooden stile and follow the F.P through the fields, to the right of Elbolton Hill and join the lane into Thorpe Village GR 013618.

At the center of the village turn right up to the top of the hill then right again to Burnsall Down to the end of the green lane and over the wooden stile on the right. follow the F.P sign over the beck, through numerous fields and stiles to enter Burnsall GR 033613. Cafe and toilet facilities here.

 

Cross over the river bridge and turn right through the stile and follow the F.P sign to Howgill along the Dales way. At Howgill Bridge GR 063.592 cross over the road and follow the lane up to the Barden Fell access point

 

* ( no dogs this section between asterisks) This route may be closed due to fire hazard and during certain dates when grouse shooting is in progress. A notice will be on display at access point with any closure restrictions. If in doubt phone, the estate office, a few days prior to your walk, Tourism Dept. Estate Office tel 01756 718009. Pass through the small gate and, continue up the track and onto the open moor to reach the F.P sign just before Simon's Seat GR 079.598.

 

Turn sharp right at the sign in a southerly direction past ‘Truckle Crags' and Cairns to join the access track down the moor, over the ford and through the wood. Almost through the wood, cross the wooden stile on the left at the wall near the clearing and follow the footpath down the steep 'Valley of Desolation'. Continuing on alongside the beck, over the footbridge up the steep slope to the left of the landslip and down again to join the access track down to the tarmac road * (dogs OK again now). Turn left along the road for approximately 100 yards and then down right following the footpath along the river bank to Cavendish Bridge and the... yes.... finish !!!!

 

Alterative route from Howgill during closure

 

Once at the bridge GR 063592 follow the lane at the L. H of the beck down to the river and continue on the river bank footpath to Barden Bridge. Cross over the bridge and follow the R.H river bank past the Strid to Cavendish Cafe and the finish

 

The walk can be started at any convenient point of your own choosing.

 

Although the car park with the BEST FACILITIES IS THE CAVENDISH CAFE one with a large café, toilets, shop and secure parking with a daily parking fee.
