Beverley Twenty

A linear walk of about 20 miles, between the Humber Bridge and Beverley Minster. The Beverley Twenty is waymarked with orange stickers except between the Westwood and the Minster.

Start from the North Bank Humber Bridge Car Park. At the southern end of the car park, cross the road and turn left towards the bridge. Just before reaching it, turn right along a wide path.

Soon turn right to a metal kissing gate. Descend the steps here, entering the Humber Bridge Country Park., and continue ahead, passing through 2 short tunnels to reach the River Humber foreshore near a partially restored mill. The route coincides now with the Wolds Way and the Trans Pennine Trail. This route preceded both.

Turn right, along the road and, before reaching an inn, turn onto the foreshore beach via a kissing gate. Walk in front of the inn and then go slightly right and along the track between hedges parallel to the beach. This continues as a track along the foreshore and rises slightly up to a gate and stile.

Enter the North Ferriby waterside park and continue along the low cliff top path. Eventually descend to the beach close to a pond. Except when the tide is very high, continue along the beach, past the North Ferriby car park and up to the wooden steps where a path enters Long Plantation.

(Divert at very high tides, following the white waymark arrows of the Wolds Way up to the footbridge over the A63. This road is shortly to be altered, and a roundabout may enable you to cross.)

The Trans Pennine Trail is left here as we still keep to the Wolds Way, and follow the wide track heading inland, across a railway bridge and up to the busy A63. Attempt to cross to the footpath on the opposite side only if the traffic is very light. It is slightly to the right. For safety, use the footbridge reached to the left, and return on the opposite side of the road.

Cross a stile and head up Melton Hill through the plantation. Keep to the main track and just after reaching the hill top bear slightly left to cross a farm track and follow the narrower path to reach a scout camp. The now wide track leads downhill to Melton Bottoms. Cross the busy road with care and take the lane opposite, uphill, by the side of the whiting works.

You may follow the Wolds Way which goes off to the left, or continue up the track to a T junction. The Wolds Way also arrives here, but now descends left to Welton. TURN RIGHT uphill and follow the track and later field side path above Welton Dale, turning left and right on the way.

Pass through a narrow belt of trees, cross a farm road and a stile and turn left for a very short distance to rejoin the Wolds Way. Turn right and follow the footpath up to the pond at Wauldby Manor. You may see a small church close to the Manor.

Take the tracks left and quickly right, in front of a modernised dwelling. (A pig farm here has become superior housing!) The track arrives at a crossing. Leave the Wolds Way finally, and continue ahead uphill. Pass through York Grounds Farm and reach the Raywell-South Cave road. (Any support vehicles please park off the road here)

Cross and walk a little to the left. Take the bridleway here and before long, descend into a valley. On the way, Skidby windmill should be visible to the right. Turn right, hedge on the left, And follow the track along the centre of the valley. It crosses to the opposite side of the hedge and ignore other tracks and paths to the side. The track widens to become a lane and passes under a disused railway bridge, where it becomes tarmacced.

Skidby is reached at Riplingham Road. (If you wish to include the Windmill: Turn right uphill just before a cemetery, follow the signposted path left at a junction to the mill. After the mill, reach the road. Turn left, and left again, into the village main street. Pass or pause at the Half Moon Inn, pass the church and follow the Little Weighton road to the right.)

Turn left along the road to Little Weighton. At the bend, take the wide track gently uphill, not the path on the right, The track narrows and reaches a gap in a hedge. Pass through and turn left and soon right, along the headland path down to the quiet road at Risby. Turn left. Reach gates on the right, the entrance to Risby Park, The undulating track reaches Risby Park Farm. Walk ahead on the farm road and descend a little to Halfpenny Gate. House on the left, bungalow on the right. A track on the right just before the bungalow, leads down to a footpath on the left where Walkington Park is entered. The path through the grass field is clear, along the centre of a shallow valley. A gateway is reached and here the path becomes enclosed,

At Walkington, a T path junction is reached. The church is on your left.

(A diversion to the village can be made here. Turn left and the take the path downhill to the right after passing the church. Several inns and a nice duck pond are found. Just past the pond, cross the road and turn into the first road to the left nearby. Bear left along Crake Wells and left at Meadow Way. Follow the footpath at the end, uphill and turn left at the top of the field to rejoin the route).

Turn right, away from the church, and pass in front of the recreation ground. Keep straight ahead until an open field is reached in front of you. Bear slightly left before continuing ahead up to the Bentley road. Take care as you turn right, along the road to reach the converted farm on the left. Take the track here, which enters a plantation at a small S bend. Reach a small footbridge on the left. Enter the field here and continue ahead with the hedge on your left, soon descending to a larger footbridge and a path junction. Take the path uphill, soon to enter a pleasant enclosed track which opens out at a left bend before going uphill to the road at Broadgates.

Turn right, over the Beverley bypass bridge, cross the road and descend the track alongside the bypass. Reach a footpath on your right and take this, hedge on the left up to a gap where the hedge bends to the right. Bear left here and enter Beverley Westwood common.

Beware of the many other users of the common, riders, golfers, model aircraft fliers and lots more! Walk ahead along the small valley and soon bear right to ascend a wide grassy slope and see the Black Mill ahead. Head to the mill, crossing a practice horse racing track on the way.

Beverley looks beautiful below. The Minster is clear to see. Walk in its direction. Cross a road and then bear a little more right to aim for the far corner of the common. Turn left along Cartwright Lane and ahead at the junction, to walk along Keldgate. The Minster is soon reached. Walk round to the North door and the finish!
