The walk starts at the free car park down Crabmill Lane, Easingwold GR 528 696. Leave car park from corner diagonally opposite main entrance s.p. pedestrian access on f.p. between tennis courts and Galtres Hall, wooden fence on R. Pass Tourist Information on L and TR into Market Place. Pass the George and the York pubs on R, Angel pub on L, s.a. down Spring St. X to L hand pavement, when Spring St. turns to R go L down Church Hill on R hand pavement. In 100 yds TR down Millfield Lane GR 529 701.
Down the lane which after last house on L turns into a tk, s.a. to St. (w.m.) and with hedge on L to st, over and slightly L (20') across field, under power lines to s.p. and rd. TR, then left at T.j. ignoring f.p. on L. 100 yds after access rd to Peep o' Day farm TR down b.w. GR 533 723.
At cattle grid TL towards Thornton Lodge farm. Just before farmyard TR down tk (w.m.) over cattle grid, ignore b.w. on L, s.a. down tk, over cattle grid and bear R (110') across field. Just before cattle grid TL (w.m.) hedge on R to go thru gap in hedge, s.a. for 10 yds and over st (w.m.) s.a. keeping hedge/stream on R. When hedge/stream go off to R s.a. on green tk to metal gt. Thru and over st next to 2nd metal gt (w.m.) across field (30') following white w.m. posts, over f.b. and slightly L due N still following white posts to rd. X rd and TL uphill into Oulston. 25 yds after 30 mph signs X rd and TL down farm tk/minor rd. GR 547 744.
Ignore b.w. on L 100yds after Manor Farm, s.a. on tk for just under a mile to rd GR 534 745 X rd and s.a. down b.w. Ignore fork to L, s.a downhill, ignoring tk to Garbutts Ghyll on R, s.a. with holly hedge on L. Upon reaching gts on both R and L, s.a. down hedged path (w.m on tree) to go through small gt. TR for 5 yds and X stream between two holly trees, s.a. up field with trees on L (w.m. on tree) to LARGE white gt (w.m.) Ignore small white gt in hedge on L. Thru gt, hedge on L to 2nd white gt, thru and with The Lodge now on your R under trellis to next white gt, thru and TR, wall then hedge on R to rd. GR 525 748. TL and on reaching Husthwaite village sign TR down Kays Bank. In 50 yds TR on b.w. and follow thru 4 gts to Beacon Banks trig GR 527 752.
From trig s.a. for just under half a mile to white w.m. in hedge on L. TR across field to b.w. sign by large tree, TL down farm rd for 200 yds to f.p. sign on L (just before High Leys) Over st and downhill due N to st, over and TR, hedge on R to field corner, TL, hedge still on R to metal gt, thru and s.a. down field, hedge still on R to f.b. Over and TL, hedge/stream now on L to large wooden gt, thru, over stream and thru 2nd wooden gt to rd. GR 533 767, TR into Coxwold. At X rds TR (TL for Fauconberg Arms and shop) 150 yds after bridge over old railway ignore st on L (this field is one huge bog) carry on down rd to just before clump of trees and lake on L, X rd and TL. This is the Colley Broach road which you follow for just under 2 mls ignoring all turn offs. When you reach the dismantled railway at GR 566 769 (take care not to miss as its not too obvious) s.a. for 150 yds to tk on L GR 567 769 (f.p. sign) to follow to Old Pilfit farm GR 567 772.
With farmhouse now on R, s.a. thru metal gt and between farm buildings to continue on good tk ignoring gt and tk on L. When tk forks go R, 100 yds after wood and stream join you on immediate R, GR 568 777 TL thru metal gt (w.m.) and uphill with hedge on R. After 150 yds at w.m. TL across field (315') on undefined path to st in hedge. Over ditch and 2nd st bearing R across corner of field towards row of trees in front of fence.
Downhill with trees on L, fence on R to metal gt (w.m.) s.a. with fence on L to L hand of 2 adjacent gts (w.m.) thru and s.a. with hedge on L to gt (w.m.) Do not head towards Wass Grange on tk to R as some maps suggest but go s.a. to w.m. by telegraph pole. Follow L hand line of poles to gt and st, over and s.a. with hedge on L for 75 yds to st on L. Over and TR for 35 yds to w.m. then half left west to st (w.m.) s.a. uphill still going west away from fence on R to w.m. by bushes on L.
Stay on higher ground with fence always 10 - 25 yds away on R to pass small ruin on R, downhill with gorse bushes on your immediate L to w.m. hidden in bushes, follow past cluster of trees on L (do not go down to house) to further w.m. by stream. Do not follow stream but head across large field to gt (30') to gt, thru gt (w.m.) trees/hedge on R for 150 yds to w.m. just beyond large tree on R, s.a. with trees/bushes on L. Gradually leave line of trees on faint path (310') to w.m. directly in front of Byland Abbey. Thru gap in trees still heading towards Abbey to w.m. by wire fence. Continue with Abbey on L to st and rd. GR 550 791.
TL and pass the Abbey Inn (not compulsary) on your R and in 150 yds TR at f.p. sign GR 548 788 (not on all maps) over st into field, s.a. hedge on R for 150 yds to w.m. (Cams Head) bear L (260') in slight dip to st in fence (w.m.) by large tree, across field (270') to st, over and s.a. with hedge on L to st. Over and carry on. hedge still on L to metal gt and st. Over and thru gt on L s.p. Oldstead Grange, carry on with hedge now on R to st (Cams Head now on R) Ignore f.p. sign on L carrying on s.a. with hedge still on R for 25 yds. As hedge goes off to R follow it for 50 yds to sunken wooded path. Down path to metal gt and st on R and over. Do not follow tk on R but take faint path uphill (330') to metal gt in front of barn. Go over adjacent st and between farm buildings onto tk (Wakendale House on L) stay on tk to rd GR 533 797.
TL into Oldstead and past Black Swan on L (again not compulsary) and 10 yds after rd to L s.p. Coxwold TL thru gt (w.m.) s.a. and in 10 yds over st. X field due west on faint path to fence, TL (w.m.) fence now on R to st, over and downhill to L (215') to w.m. Down into dip and X f.b. going up bank thru bushes to w.m. In 10 yds thru gap in hedge TR s.p. Kilburn. Down valley, hedge on R to f.p. between trees. Carry on ,uphill, keeping main body of trees on L to metal gt, and s.a. slightly downhill keeping fence/hedge on R to small metal gt on R Thru gt TL down enclosed f.p. to metal gt, TR to minor rd. GR 521 796.
X rd and s.a. thru gt (w.m.) and uphill (280') to st, s.a. down middle of field to gt, thru and down enclosed f.p. to gt and rd GR 518 796. TR into High Kilburn, pass phone box on L and downhill to white gt on R, thru (seat on L) and down tarmac path in field to further gt. X farm tk and s.a. thru gt and on to white kissing gt into churchyard. Follow hedge on L and thru black metal gates which just happen to bring you to the Forresters Arms (Now there's a surprise - highly recommended, open all day, seven days a week, all year) There is also a little tea shop opposite, although opening times may vary according to season.
On leaving pub (after breakfast?) TL down rd. 200 yds after rd to High Kilburn on L look out for double metal gts and st on R GR 515 792. Take the R of 2 w. marked paths (undefined) bearing slightly L (230') of wooden fence to pass to L of old shelter. From shelter s.a. (230') to st, X overgrown tk to gt, thru and uphill with hedge on R. When you stop climbing bear L to diagonally X field to opposite corner to copse and st (w.m.) over and slightly uphill with fence/hedge on L to metal gt and st. Over and s.a. fence on R to pass old quarry below on R, bear L with fence to gt on R (w.m.) thru, TR for 20 yds to trees then TL. Downhill with wood on R to w.m. by tk going off to R. TL, hedge on R to go thru gap at bottom of field, s. a. hedge/trees now on L to T. j. with b.w. GR 506 779. Do not go down to Skew Grange as map may suggest but TL thru gt (w.m.)
You are now going slightly uphill with hedge on L heading for Wildon Grange. When you reach metal gt (w.m.) on L, thru and TR, hedge/fence now on R, s.a. to go thru metal gt. X field to R hand corner (120') and metal gt (w.m.) thru and s.a. with fence/trees on L and thru metal gt. 15 yds before farm TR on b.w. (do not go between farm buildings) Thru gt (w.m.) and along tk (can be muddy) When tk ends and you are faced with 2 gts take R hand one and s.a. with fence on L to small wooden gt, s.a. trees on L to pass to R of pond and s.a. again with trees on L to b.w. sign and rd. GR 517 773.
X rd and s.a. down b.w. to Angram Grange (w.m.) On reaching metal gt TR (w.m.) on grass, hedge now on R to go thru metal gt. With farm now on L to further gt, thru and into field, s.a. with hedge on R to gt and tk, follow tk to rd into Carlton Husthwaite GR 505 766, s.a. heading into village (pub closed down at time of writing) Just before first house on L (End Cottage) TL down Ings Lane GR 501 766. Follow to farm on L, house on R when it turns into a tk, s.a. for just under a mile, passing small airfield on R to bridge carrying dismantled railway, GR 509 751. Under bridge and s.a. (s.p. private road) to T.j. of tks TL and in 100 yds TR down tk to rd. GR 514 751.
TR and in 20 yds at f.p. sign TL into field. Ignore metal gt, s.a. and bear slightly R to carry on with hedge on L. When first hedge comes in from R to within 20 yds of path (take care - no w.m.) TR and follow this hedge on R hand side to gt and rd. GR 516 746. TR and in 35 yds look out for st on L. Over and uphill in field with hedge on R. On reaching field corner s.a. thru hedge to st, over and s.a. still with hedge on R thru next gt (pond on L) across field to R of 3 solitary trees, to pick up fence/hedge on R. (ignore b.w. to R) X this long narrow field diagonally (170') to st (w.m.) Over and s. a. with hedge on L, at end of field over f.b. and TL, hedge on L to rd GR 520 733.
X rd and into Acaster Hill farm (f.p. sign) Do not enter farmyard. Just before yard TL thru 1st metal gt and X field diagonally to metal gt (50') NOT gt in corner next to hedge. Thru gt and down field with hedge on R, under power lines to end of field. TR over st (w.m.) and s.a. down field with hedge on L, maintaining this direction for just under a mile (hedge always on L) going thru double metal gt. On approaching Peep o' Day farm still with hedge/fence on L, over st (farm now on R) over 2nd st, s.a. to X farm tk GR 532 721 via sts into field, s.a. hedge/stream on L to f.b. Over and X field (180') to st and f.b. Over and X this field (190') to st and rd.
You are now back to where you were shortly after you started. Remember? All you have to do now is retrace your steps to the car, bus stop, pub, chippy or whatever turns you on.
X rd and over st (w.m.) X field (200') over st, hedge on R to gt, thru and onto tk that turns into Millfield Lane. S.a. into Easingwold.
