Follow tarmac FP for 30 yds. TL at SCW WM and climb steadily uphill through trees. Stay on path (following WMs) as it bends R uphill. Pass through gate and continue (320°) uphill. At top of hill follow path as it bends L. Go through WM gate. TL uphill to 2nd gate. Continue with electric fence on R. Where fence veers R to gate remain on broad green path (320°). At WM at top of hill go through 5-bar wooden gate. Continue on path (310°).
At path T-junction (GR959279) continue SA. At 2nd path junction and SCW WM in dip (GR952282) TL uphill (228°).
At yellow PFP marker continue uphill. At SCW WM at corner of stone wall continue SLOT with wall on R to WM gate in wall ahead. TR and go through gate (GR945277). At end of wood continue SA on green path with fence on R and go steadily uphill (310°) branching left onto faint footpath at (GR934278) to ladder stile and gate in wall. When track turns sharply L take waymarked path (between mature trees on R and new plantings on L) (322°) to wooden gate. Pass through gate and follow path to further stand of trees (not visible at this point) (270°). X stile in fence and TL. After 5 yds enter trees to walk downhill (beware of fallen trees on path). On entering small clearing path bears R through gorse bushes. Exit trees and X stile in fence and turn R over small stream (Shorthope Burn).
Continue along path with sheep enclosure on R. At end of enclosure continue SA and follow stream (Trowup Burn) with fence on R for approx ⅓ mile. X stream and stile in fence. Continue slightly uphill to pick up track parallel to fence on L (approx 20 yds away). Opposite sheepfold (GR864262) take path up small valley on R (path indistinct at first but becomes clearer further up). Continue up valley to Wideopen Head. Go through gate to go ahead on path (40°) to stone track (there should be two metal gateposts with no gate). X stone track (still on 40°) to reach, after approx 75yds, a small piece of broken fence.
SA for another 150yds (Beware of discarded wire fence 10 yds in) to find beginning of wire fence on R. Here turn HL for a 10yds to pick up green track through bracken and follow (20°) to small WM gate. Go through gate and continue SA to reach broad stone track on R.
