Route Recommendations

START to C.P.1 Leave under bridge, passing new housing and allotments and later passing under footbridge. Bear L, following path. 1½m from start path crosses Scalby Beck. Follow path by side of old peoples' homes (Chichester Way). Cross Station Road, TR and then L to housing estate (signposted). After 100 yds turn R and proceed to bungalow at end. Path goes round back of this and returns to railway track. 100 yds after crossing Burniston Beck, cross A165 and descend concrete steps to return to railway track. Continue on this for 6m to C.P.1 at Ravenscar.

C.P.1 to C.P.2. Continue along Station Road as far as entrance to Raven Hall Hotel. Take footpath to L – "Cleveland Way". Continue downhill, NOT through gate to riding stables. You are now on CW. Follow to Sandsend. To reach checkpoint go along seafront to car park at bottom of Lythe Bank. Go through archway into car park and flight of wooden steps beyond garages.

C.P.2 to C.P.3 Follow CW to RUNSWICK. C.P. is in upper (grass) car park.

C.P.3 to C.P.4. Follow CW to and through Staithes. After leaving Cowbar Lane and crossing fields, CW meets tarmac road. Take 1st or 2nd road on L and at next junction turn R. C.P. is on R, in lay-by, just beyond mast.

C.P.4 to C.P.5 Continue on road and at fork bear L. In Loftus TR and follow A174. ½m after Brotton, where road turns L under railway, keep straight on over level-crossing. After further ½m beyond Brough House farm, turn, L. Continue on this path to C.P. near "Ship Inn".

C.P.5 to C.P.6 Follow A174 along seafront and then L up 1-in-4 hill. At fork keep straight ahead    (L) and later TL into ornamental gardens. Look for CW signpost. Path continues through gardens and descends into Rifts wood. On reaching narrow lane TL, descend to bottom of hill then TR to go under railway viaduct and cross FB. Path winds uphill, through trees, then crosses fields on well-trodden route to housing estate at Skelton. Continue along street, straight on at crossroads and at next crossroads TL and continue to main road (A173). Cross this and go up street opposite. Steps directly ahead lead to tarmac FP to Skelton Green. Cross road and follow lane to R of corner-shop (Airy Hill Lane). Shortly after farm, CW turns R and follows LHS of field then goes L along top of Spring Bank. After crossing stile, keep well to LEFT to avoid Quarry and descend to "Fox Hounds" and A171. Cross road and turn L. C.P. is in lay-by, opposite ICI filling station.

C.P.6 to C.P.7 to C.P.8 - FOLLOW CW

C.P.8 to C.P.9 Stay on CW to Bloworth Crossing. Here, go straight across and continue down Rudland Rigg for further 2m, Descend to Cow Sike Farm. On reaching road TL. Where road forks bear R. C.P. is on R, 200 yds beyond Groat House Farm, in former school.

C.P.9 to C.P.10 Continue on road to bottom of hill and up other side to farm ahead (Low South House). Path goes through farm yard to R of house. Carry on up hillside on sunken cart track. Pass.        through gate in ridge-wall to reach road, where TL and continue to entrance of Bonfield Ghyll. (Signpost "Public Bridleway to Bilsdale"). Just before reaching house bear L to FB over beck. Go straight up hillside for ½m and pick up track on moor top marked with posts. Where these swing definitely S look for marker and from this out across moor towards TV on bearing 286. Once over crest descend to wire fence. DO NOT climb this but carry along it N until a marked gate, partly hidden by remains of broken drystone wall is reached Follows markers downhill to road. TL and 350 yds TR to cross FB over beck. CHECK IN HERE BEFORE CONTINUING TO FANGDALE BACK VILLAGE HALL for main meal stop.

C.P.10 to C.P.11 Cross beck by FB just below Village Hall. Continue to Malkin Bower and TR to go up hill on cart track. On reaching top gateway head across open moor on bearing 290 to pick up rutted track ascending R shoulder of hill ahead. Just beyond ridge, aim NW for ruin (Wether House). Follow obvious line of gates. On passing through gateway just beyond ruin, where TV mast directly ahead, head due W aiming for buildings on ridge ahead (Low Thwaites). Path from gate in wall ahead leads direct to farm-yard. Keep straight ahead across short heather, gradually descending to broad green track leading from valley below to Scotland Farm. Blow Gill may be crossed at foot of path which descends on LHS of stream and wall. Follow track through farm and on reaching road TR and continue to Wheat Beck (1¼m). Here TL at water-splash, go through gate and follow Sunken track, slightly L of farm-road, which ascends between trees to gate and open moor. Here TL and make bee-line along sheep tracks close to wall until tractor route winding to top of Arden Great Moor is reached. At LH 'hairpin', TR and ascend steep peaty track to moor road. TR and follow to Whitestones, where CW is rejoined. C.P. is 1¼m further S on DROVE ROAD.

C.P.11 to C.P. 12 Continue on Drove Road to Sneck Yate, then follow road to Dialstone House. At junction TL and continue for ½ m to COLD KIRBY.

C.P.l2 to C.P.13 Follow CW to Helmsley. Cross market place, TR and follow Thirsk road (A170). TL just before river-bridge (Ryegate), then first R (Southlands) passing old mills. When nearing gas-holder, follow fence round on LHS and join track of old railway. Continue on this to bridge, bear R and cross farm track to C.P. in field.

C.P.13 to C.P.14 Cross bridge, continue to tarmac road and TR to Harome. Bear R after thatched pub. At T-junction (along road signposted “Harome Siding”) bear R to road-bridge over beck. Continue past siding, through gate into field and follow track close to LH edge. Pass through two gates to reach FB over Rye. Cross and immediately TL keeping close to river bank, then climb slope to farm track leading past East Newton.to road. TR for ½m and at B1257 TR for further 250yds. Just before Leysthorpe Lodge TL, follow track round farm and through marked gate. TL and descend on track across fields. After 1m cross concrete bridge over beck and TL round edge of field. Keep to edge of fields, later crossing level-crossing of old railway. After 400 yds TL on tarmac road and continue for ¼m to Spring Farm at CAWTON. (Parts of this section will be waymarked)

C.P.14 to C.P.15 Continue along track to Hovingham. TR and follow road towards Malton. After 1m, just after house beyond bridge over beck, TR up track (marked) and follow this to track on ridge. TL and continue until reaching road at SLINGSBY BANK TOP.

C.P.15 to C.P.16 Cross road, follow track on ridge, leading to gate and forest path. Follow ridge, keeping to edge of trees, until track crossing is reached. TR on sunken track and descend to road. TL and continue to C.P. on verge near entrance to EASTHORPE HALL.

C.P.16 to C.P.17 Follow road to junction with A64 in Malton. TL and soon L again (The Mount). Cross Middlecave Road. Third R along Mount Crescent - Pasture Lane - leads past cemetery on R and refuse destructor on L to Norton and Malton RUFC and FINISH.
